One-Pager Project - “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T.S. Eliot

Description: A One-Pager is a single-page response to your reading which allows you to creatively express your understanding of the text. A One-Pager involves connecting the verbal to the visual, which results in transforming the text into concrete images.

Directions:

For this assignment, you will use an unlined piece of 8.5 x 11 paper (any color) to create your project. You can use regular printer paper, card stock or scrapbook paper.

Step 1:

Write the title of the story (in quotation marks) and the author’s name on the front of your paper.

Step 2:

Choose the most powerful image or set of images from the poem. Illustrate it on your page. Your image does not have to be hand drawn. You can use clipart, images cut out from magazines, etc.

Step 3:

Choose three key words from the poem and place them strategically on the page. The key words must actually appear in the text and must be significant to the meaning of the story or poem.

Step 4:

Choose two quotations/lines/phrases from the poem that you think are most important. Make sure that you punctuate with quotation marks and a proper citation. A citation includes the author’s last name and page number in parentheses. It should look like this (Welty 1).

Step 5:

Somewhere on your paper, list two figures of speech or literary techniques (with examples) that you can identify in the text.

Step 6:

Look at your image, key words, and quotations. Determine how they relate to each other. Write an interpretive theme statement that expresses the meaning of what is on your page. You may need to write two or more sentences to express your idea fully. Try to avoid using the word “I” in your theme statement.

Step 7:

Write your complete heading on the BACK of your one-pager. Do not put your name on the front.

Reminders:

  • § Be creative! This project’s goal is to allow you to creatively express what you have learned from the story Be sure to fill up the entire page with your information. Make it look interesting!
  • § You will be graded on effort and accuracy. You must take the time to check your grammar and spelling.
  • § This project will count as a 50 point formative assessment grade.
